Downtown LA past and present

Even though Downtown Los Angeles has gone through many changes in the past, much of the architecture has remained the same. Modern and historic photographs from Main and Spring streets show the changes.

The historic photos are from “Getty — Faces of LA, 1936-1958“, courtesy of University of Southern California, on behalf of the USC Special Collections.

Spring Street looking south from Fifth Street. KRKD Radio Tower can be seen on the top of the Spring Arcade building.

Looking north along Main Street between Fifth and Sixth Street. Where there used to be many small businesses is now a parking lot.

Looking north at the point at which Main Street and Spring Street separate.  The trolley car line of Main Street no longer exists, but there is a movement to bring a trolley line back to downtown.
