About

Our inspiration

In the distance the downtown high-rise skyline challenges the horizon in a cloudless sky; in the opposite direction, the picturesque Hollywood sign smiles down from its post Hills above: Echo Park is nestled between famous Los Angeles neighborhoods and yet it lacks its own distinction and definition. As its name metaphorically suggests it echoes the identities of the cities that surround it and yet never takes on one of its own. Its identity is derived simultaneously from violent news reports reflecting the gang warfare that continues to claim the lives of its youth, and the artistic accomplishments created by its locals. The reputation created paints two distinct pictures and two distinct identities. The duality of this neighborhood has existed in a consistent state of flux and so it seems to be a community in transition. One thing that unites them is the iconic lake that is currently undergoing its own transition. The lake is being recreated and many members of the community are confidant that they are collectively moving toward something better. Crime is going down. Citizens are connecting. The construction continues. It is a work in progress, much like the city it is housed in. This Site serves to highlight the connections that can be made and blur the boundaries between these two divergent communities.
